FlatWorld Announces New Capabilities for Online Textbook and Homework Platforms
New functionality in digital solutions for online reader, homework, and expanded catalog will enhance students’ learning experiences
BOSTON, MARCH 25, 2021—FlatWorld, a digital-first publisher of award-winning and affordable college textbooks that are now used by faculty at more than 2,000 institutions across the U.S., today announced a wide range of enhancements to its digital platform and catalog. Platform updates include new capabilities for FlatWorld Homework, new and redesigned technical features within the digital reading platform, and 11 new and recently revised titles that include updates related to the COVID-19 pandemic and 2020 election coverage.
“As we continue to buck industry trends with strong, double-digit growth, FlatWorld remains true to its core mission—to empower professors through our textbooks’ affordability, quality, and usability,” said Alastair Adam, Co-CEO of FlatWorld. “We are firmly committed to continued investment and expansion of both our core offerings and our digital platform. The pandemic has only exacerbated the affordability challenges faced by many students. We have seen a growing recognition by faculty that FlatWorld can be a part of the solution, providing instructor-friendly, high-quality alternatives to over-priced incumbents. We listen to the challenges faced by educators across the U.S. in both digital and physical learning environments, and we are committed to ever-improving support for these educators.”
FlatWorld continues to accelerate investment in its Homework and online reader platforms. FlatWorld Homework has more than double the number of users this quarter year-over-year and this trend is expected to continue throughout 2021. Thousands of students across the U.S. successfully use Flatworld’s effortless homework application—on a variety of devices—to enhance learning and improve their remote learning experience.
Highlighted capabilities in digital platforms
Redesigned online reader functionality—This spring, FlatWorld released an entirely redesigned online textbook reading experience. Included in the update is the release of enhanced search functionality. Instructors and students alike will benefit from advanced search ability which allows even more accurate navigation to key terms within the digital titles. The addition of page number navigation for select titles in the online reader platform makes switching between print and online copies a breeze. Online page number navigation streamlines assigned reading and class discussion references, allowing page numbers to be used by all students regardless of their preferred textbook format.
Video uploader—Taking advantage of the tremendous growth of mobile devices and webcams, the new video uploader tool allows students to securely record high-quality videos in their own environment and submit them to their instructor for review and grading. FlatWorld’s Homework platform helps both students and educators record videos and, more importantly, share videos without the hassle and privacy concerns of uploading to a platform like YouTube. Videos can be up to ten minutes in length.
Expanded grading capabilities—Alongside the new video recorder questions, is the ability for instructors to create their own grading rubric or customize the default expert-created structured rubrics. This allows course creators to clearly communicate expectations to students. Updated grading functionality streamlines the feedback loop for sharing details on why students received their final score.
