More than 1,000 textbooks will be donated to Collin College’s chemistry department for 2020–2021 academic year

BOSTON, October 29, 2020 — FlatWorld, a digital-first publisher of award-winning college learning materials that are both affordable and high quality, today announced that it is awarding free textbooks to students of Collin College’s chemistry department. As part of the FlatWorld Textbook Scholarship Program, more than 1,000 students in total are expected to receive free textbooks from FlatWorld during the fall 2020 and spring 2021 semesters.

“As a community college, many of our students come from challenging socio-economic backgrounds with the desire to improve themselves through higher-level education as well as improving the environmental situations around them. Offering these college students any kind of relief from their financial obligations associated with the high cost of modern education would be greatly appreciated not only by the student, but also I believe from this academic institution,” said Dr. Robert Robinson, Chemistry professor at Collin College, in his scholarship application.

Professor Robinson’s class will be using FlatWorld’s General Chemistry textbook, written by Bruce Averill and Patricia Eldredge. Averill and Eldredge adopt a seamless approach to explaining the interdisciplinary relevance of chemistry and place a key focus on developing learners' critical thinking and problem-solving skills. A range of supplements for General Chemistry are provided at no additional cost, including FlatWorld Homework, an instructor’s manual, PowerPoint lecture notes, test banks, and a test generator. The college’s chemistry department is expected to adopt the textbook in spring 2021.

“This year we received triple the number of applicants as the previous year. In reading through the list of applicants, it reminds us that textbook costs remain an expensive barrier to education across the country,” said Alastair Adam, co-CEO of FlatWorld. “As part of our mission to bring textbook prices back down to earth, we intend to continue to expand the FlatWorld Scholarship Program. We understand the challenges higher ed institutions are facing amid a recession and a global pandemic and we remain as committed as ever to offering our high-quality learning materials at the most affordable prices.”

Any faculty teaching at a U.S. institution are eligible to apply for the FlatWorld Textbook Scholarship, whether the professor is currently using a FlatWorld textbook or simply considering adopting a FlatWorld textbook for the first time. Consistent with our goal of making using a FlatWorld textbook as easy as possible for faculty, the application is short and straightforward to complete. FlatWorld launched the Textbook Scholarship in 2019, and applications for the FlatWorld 2021 Textbook Scholarship are open now.
